Goa to become first small state with two airports with MOPA airport becoming operational

In a development that is likely to boost the real estate industry in the country, Goa is all set to become the first small state to have two operational commercial airports. Currently, the only airport operational at Goa is located at Dabolim. Considering the limitations of this airport to handle passenger load and the increasing population in North Goa, the development of the new airport would be a welcome move.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has given a license to the airport at MOPA to start functioning soon. The Prime Minister is likely to inaugurate this new airport shortly, and it would become operational soon. Besides, an Indigo-A320 aircraft has already been a part of the testing process for the flights. With the operation of the new airport at Goa, the small state will add a feather to its cap. This would be the only small state or union territory in India to have more than one airport.

With the population of North Goa constantly increasing, the existing airport is encountering several hindrances. Due to its location, the existing airport cannot handle more than 70 flights each day. However, with places like Dodamarg and Sasoli witnessing a spike in population, it would be a challenge for the commercial flight infrastructure in the city to tackle the passenger load. Moreover, the Konkan belt, which has some of the most beautiful beaches in Goa, needs more accessibility. Considering the strategic location of the MOPA Airport, these problems would be addressed. The new airport is located 30 Kms. from Panjim and 35 Kms. from the Konkan region. Besides, places in North Goa that are currently in the spotlight of real estate developers are also located close to this airport. A spike in property rates is on cards once this airport becomes operational.

The new airport at MOPA would be capable of handling 150 flights a day. The authorities have declared that both the airports would function simultaneously from the city. This would stabilize the commercial flight ecosystem, enhancing the air traffic handling capability of the city significantly. For real estate developers, this is a positive development, as they are already receiving more inquiries. People buying second homes in North Goa would also benefit from this development.
